The Issue of Fighting in the National Hockey League

...And here comes another opinion on the century old argument of whether there should be fighting in hockey or not. Now hopefully my point of view is different then the normal anti-fighting or pro-fighting arguments.

Why Hockey Fights Should Be Allowed?

This is the section where I write my opinions on why fighting in hockey should be allowed to continue. And I will move on to why it shouldn't be later.

Roots of Hockey
Fighting in hockey has been a sort of "tradition". Throughout hockey's creation fighting has been part of the game. Fighting is a part of the roots of hockey. It has been a piece of the game and it's hard to take something away from the game without changing the game completely.

Policing the Game
Fighting actually, believe it or not, serves a purpose in the game. The players use this technique to "police the game". Players go after and fight players that throw cheap shots. That's why you see a fight usually after a hit that leaves one player injured. It's a way to show your displeasure with the hit and a way to discourage that kind of behavior.

Enforcers
A lot of hockey fights involve enforcers. Enforcers are the players that are known as the tough players who protect the more skilled players. They often also start fights in order to inspire their team. It's often seen that after a fight initiated by the losing team that team ends up scoring afterwards. It's a way to wake your team up. And momentum is a huge deal in hockey.

Why Hockey Fights Should Be Stopped?

This is just a list of reasons that I see as valid of why hockey fights should be stopped.

Bad Influence
People, especially kids, see these fights and they are seen as good things. I think there is some truth to this. I believe that it could promote fighting in kids. I mean my least favorite part of the fights is the gladiator atmosphere. Everyone goes crazy and starts cheering. It's a little disgusting. It reminds me of the Roman Gladiators. I don't think people should watch for the fights.

Hockey Fights Wrap-up
Fighting in hockey and the National Hockey League is something that I think should be allowed. I just hate the fact that people watch for the fights. I think it should add to the game not be the game. It's disgusting how people go crazy for people fighting. But I do think fighting is necessary at times and is a way to shift the momentum. I think the problem isn't fighting but the people who watch it and love it so much. Some of them don't even care about hockey.
